NWCCD Relaunches Weekend Welding Program, spots available
This past March, Northern Wyoming Community College District launched a new welding certificate designed for working adults. The Weekend Welding Certificate, available at Sheridan College and Gillette College, is intended to be completed in one year, and courses are held on Fridays and Saturdays. After a brief hiatus due the coronavirus crisis, the District is relaunching the program and once again has limited spots available.
Students new to the program will begin with an online summer safety course starting Monday, June 29. In-person courses will resume on both campuses on Friday, July 24 with Thermal Cutting and Oxyfuel Welding.
“This is a great opportunity for working adults, whether you already work in a technical field and want to add welding to your skillset or are ready for a completely new career,” said Dr. Estella Castillo-Garrison, vice president for academic affairs. “With this certificate, you can increase your earning potential significantly.”
The Weekend Welding Certificate prepares students for entry-level work in welding and follows the same 32-credit curriculum as the traditional Welding Certificate already offered by the District. In addition to gaining an overall understanding of welding machines, processes and hands-on proficiency, students will develop skills in the areas of print reading, welding symbols, welding inspection and destructive and non-destructive testing. Students will also gain important knowledge and skills necessary to prepare them for welding qualification. The certificate transitions seamlessly to the Associate of Applied Science degree program without loss of credit or time.
“This offering gives working adults an opportunity to advance their careers with a skill that is in high demand in our region with a schedule that works for them,” said NWCCD President Dr. Walter Tribley. “We are thrilled to be able to resume this hands-on program on our campuses.”
The Weekend Welding Certificate is part of Wyoming Works, an initiative launched by the Legislature last year to increase the number of adults with a college degree or certificate. Wyoming Works makes grant dollars available to adult students to help offset the cost of going back to school. Students in the Weekend Welding Certificate program may also qualify for other scholarships, and on-campus housing is available to interested students.
