Forging Success: Welding Instructor uses F/S Grants to Enhance Program

Welding instructor Troy Toth has been utilizing Sheridan College Foundation Grants in various ways to improve and enhance the education of the students in the Welding Department at Sheridan College.

In 2021 he received funds to attend a training class for the American Welding Society Certified Welding Inspector and Certified Welding Educator certifications in Ohio.  In the past, Sheridan College welding students who had completed Toth’s classes were required to have other instructors do their certifications before applying for employment. As a Certified Inspector and Educator, Toth is now able test and certify his own student welders to AWS standards and have them meet requirements for employment, streamlining their path to a lucrative career.

Due to budgetary constraints, the Welding department is limited in its ability to acquire specialized equipment. Toth applied for and was awarded two SCF Faculty Staff grants. First, he purchased a portable suitcase wire feed welder which is broadly used in industry.  He then used grant funds to buy a manual pipe beveler which is widely used in the field to prep welding joints for repair on existing pipelines, and for new pipeline installations.   The beveler is an essential part of pipeline welding industry.   These purchases allow the SC welding students invaluable experience on “real-world” equipment which they previously were not able to access.

Toth is working hard to prepare his students to meet the needs of employers in the growing welding job market. With the help of the SCF grants, Troy Toth is going “above and beyond” to give his students every opportunity to succeed in their welding career.
