Dee Davis ’72 – Two Great Careers
Dee didn’t even know what a dental hygienist was. She was planning on attending the University of Wyoming to study secretarial sciences when her father suggested that she investigate the new Dental Hygiene program being started at Sheridan College. After learning more about the profession and the opportunities of being a dental hygienist, she enrolled in the first-ever Sheridan College Dental Hygiene class.
Moving away from her home in Laramie, WY, and out of her comfort zone for the first time, Dee had typical freshman struggles. However, in looking back, she said “moving to Sheridan and the community college environment was a good decision. I made lifelong friends, learned a lot about myself and my education was enriched by the smaller class sizes and student-success focused faculty.”
Graduating in 1972 with a Dental Hygiene Associate’s degree, Dee embarked on a fulfilling thirty-year career in Dental Hygiene. She spent most of her Dental Hygiene career in Laramie, was active in the Wyoming Dental Hygiene Associations and served two terms as a governor-appointed member of the Wyoming Boad of Dental Examiners.
When Dee retired from the dental field in 2006 her husband Walt accepted new employment in Sheridan – and the dream to return to Sheridan was fulfilled! Dee’s bucket list included getting a Bachelor’s degree so returning to Sheridan College was an easy choice. Taking classes and getting re-engaged with Sheridan College led to a part-time position in the College library, which in turn led to a full-time position with the Sheridan College Foundation. Dee’s impressive people skills made her an ideal fit for this position, which entailed working with donors, students, college employees and the community. A second career was born!
“I love working with the donors and students while staying involved in higher education. It is very gratifying to watch students blossom and grow and being able to share those stories with our donors. I feel so fortunate being involved in a community college that is supported by caring individuals and a generous philanthropic community!”
For Dee, she feels her journey has come full circle. A long time ago, Sheridan College helped put her on a path to a successful career in Dental Hygiene, and now, in her second career at the Sheridan College Foundation, she can help the College do the same for the next generation of students!
